My Prayer - The Greatest Commandment
Eternal father you are our great protector, our shepherd, our shelter, our refuge. We are your children, made and crafted by you with a precision that is unmistakably divine. You went to great lengths to make us perfect in your sight, for it is in your image that we were made. Undoubtedly the tremendous care and precision in our physical, spiritual, and emotional makeup is an example of your Love. You have even crafted (in incredible detail) for us a habitat, which you allow us to dominate and have dominion over, yet another demonstration of your Love for us.
When Jesus was asked about the greatest commandment he explained that it was to Love (God) with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself. He went on to tell the well-knownparable of the Good Samaritan to further make his point.
While the religious leaders at that time were trying to trick Jesus by asking "who is your neighbor?" I believe the greater question here is "what is love?" To get our minds around this I turn you 1Corinthians. It is not enough, though, to have knowledge of Love. Common knowledge is NOT always common practice! To really have and gain a grasp on what it means to Love we must invite God's spirit into our heart and allow Him to take control. When we do, then, and only then, are we able to experience the fruit of His Spirit.
Does the definition of love characterize you? Would your friends, family, clients, employees, neighbors, the cashier in the drive thru describe you with this definition? What is the first word to describe these fruits? What, again, is this definition? Are you filled with Joy? Does peace fill your heart (regardless of your circumstances)? Can all who know you describe you as kind, full of goodness, faithful, gentle, self-controlled? It is a tall order (not able to be filled) if we do not invite (all the time) and submit to the freeing of our creator's Holy Spirit. The fact that He would offer it to us is still another demonstration of His incredible Love.
We seek you now almighty God! Allow us, all of us, to let go and receive the incredibly freeing gift of your Spirit. It is the magic elixir and is in abundant, unending supply! Cure us (all) with it and we will cure the world! Start with me! -Amen
